To conclude: If you are running more than 5KM per time, get a decent pair of running shoes. Or every cent you saved from shoes would contribute to part of your medical treatment fee.

From Europe with Fantasy

Sep 14 Friday evening, Esplanade Concert Hall

After a three week trip, Samuel was back from Lurcerne Music Festival. We dined in marina square before the evening SSO concert. Obviously his corporeity is back in Singapore his motherland, but not his mind, which is still wandering in Europe. I told him it took me at least a few weeks to get my soul back after my first Euro trip. After sharing his 18 concerts and other experience during the trip, I guess I would be going for the festival in 5 years time. And be the only few asian face, being stared by others like monster?

At the entrance to concert hall. I met LL and his GF, whom I helped recommend and buy tickets. I had always been promoting arts especially music among my friends. It’s a bit unlucky for their first time concert experience. The evening concert wasn’t really fine. Some nasty audience were making noises all along the concert. The ushers even had to stop them during the concert….And the first two pieces in the repertoire were a bit sleepy I would say….Luckily as usual I had a cup of coffee before the concert.
During the intermission I met another two friends, Jessie and her student. I told them I would go for their Sibelius concert in Oct.

The second half of the concert was better, the brass done a good job in a few movements.
After the concert, Samuel and I went to the old place to quench our thirst for water and talk. He passed me a pack of Swiss chocolate (sinfully smooth sweet) and a CD of LSOlive recording Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique(pal, you really knows my musical taste well) as gift. With the new gem joining my collection, I have four different versions of this work, all full of fantasy!

7hrs/day.

There are a few things I’ve been promoting and supporting all these years, including but not limited to music, sports, friendship and one thing above all, Love. The last the most important, I’m least expertized… During the past weekend I’ve been promoting and supporting all these.

The Magic Flute in Cinema

It was last year the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth. Nonetheless, the genius’s influence is certainly not to be bounded by time. Concerts and operas are still playing all over the world’s concert halls and theaters. From the beginning of this year, "The Magic Flute" futher extended this magic to cinema with HD production by Metropolitan Opera. Last weekend, this magic has shown its existence in Singapore, to be precise, GVmax in Vivocity. Must thank GV for bringing in this series.

I should have called up and met my friends before the show. However I had to attend the annual meeting of AGO singapore chapter. So I wasn’t able to know beforehand whether I was able to show up before the opera started. Actually I’m not yet an active member in the Singapore organ music society. But I did benefit from AGO and met some of my best friends. So I signed up the membership just to contribute a little bit. Ahha, I’m with a grateful heart always.

Back to the cinema, I finally had myself seated before the show started. That’s a pretty nice seat, quite close to the center of the hall, which allowed me to evaluate GV’s best hall’s acoustic and sound system. This HD version is the recorded Dec 2006 with James Levine conducting the orchestra. The stage design and costumes are contemporary. Well, I have no bias, but I really prefer the orginal setting as shown below.

The story wasn’t complex and more important it’s in English not German. I followed up the performance quite well till the last second of the casts and found myself again the only few left in the hall. I turned into the Food Republic next door for a drink and disappeared in illusion with a miss call sent.

The singing and stage performence: 8/10. The coloratura soprano sung pretty impressively. Papageno’s performence too.
The stage and costume design: 7/10. "The Phantom of the Opera" is still the best I seen so far.
Sound reproduction: 6/10. I have no idea whether it’s due to the recording or the GVmax sound system. Guess it’s the later one. It’s incomparable to a live orchestra.
Video reproduction: 7/10. Good.
Overall: 7. At least I dun need to travel to NY.

The funniest QMD

But the facts are:

J.S.Bach: First wife died at age 36.
Mozart: Himself died age 35.
Beethoven: Troubled all through his life, never married any one though engaged once.
Tchaikovsky: His only marriage broke up in nine weeks. Thereafter or even before that he turned to homosexuality and Platonism.
Berlioz: With Symphony Fantasitique, he won his love, however only for a very short period of time.
Let’s travel through time and space line to modern China, 窦唯(Dou Wei)、张国荣(Lesile Cheung); Stretch a little bit wider to visual artists, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Ruiz Picasso….

The extraordinary and abnormal are sometime the same thing with different interpretions.
Don’t blame me, my musician friends, those guys I mentioned are far away from us. And I presented truth and facts only~_~

And the worst goes to…

Mission: Impossible II (2000)  my rating 4  IMDB rating 5.7
I watched this movie before the release of MI III. And it stopped me from watching MI III..btw, MI I not bad.
Started by Tom Cruise with cool demonstration of rock climbing skills, the rest of the movie is unquestionable a waste of time and film. There are many stupid stories from Hollywood. Nonetheless this tends to be among the stupider I ever watched. Horrible spy tricks contributed a lot to this conclusion. If there is one thing not too bad, that’s the music, which received many more awards than the movie itself.

Around the World in 80 Day (2004) my rating 5  IMDB rating 5.6
Not fun at all, not serious either, a ruin to the classic. Definitely lower than Jacky Cheng’s average level.

War of the Worlds (2005) my rating 5  IMDB rating 6.6
I hated 99% of this movie. When I knew how much they spent on it (132 million USD), I started to hate the rest 1%.
Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise has done some good movies, but this one certainly not.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) my rating 5 IMDB rating 7.3
The first of this series "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" is widely considered a masterpiece, and I do agree. However, this sequential is poorly done IMHO.

Resident Evil (2002) my rating 6 IMDB rating 6.2
The original game is a milestone in the game industry. However this film adaption is not. Even the sequential title is a better one.

Sleepless in Seattle (1993) my rating 6   IMDB rating 6.6
Both mine and IMDB rating suggests the quality of this movie is far below its fame.
It talks all about falling in love at first hear, but nothing afterward, which should be more important.
Some parts I like in the film: first, the romantic empire state building, as selected in a few other romance films; second, soundtracks, including my all time jazz favorite "As Time Goes By" (also selected in the romantic masterpiece "Casablanca").

无极 (2005) my rating 6  IMDB rating 5.6

Metropolitan Opera: The Magic Flute, Metropolitan Opera: The First Emperor (秦始皇)。

Save the best for the last.

Aug 26  Regular runner Captain Ho aged 25 died after finishing Singapore Bay Run Half-marathon.

中午ExxonMobile-NTU Lunch Time Concert, Rebecca演唱Rabindranath Tagore的诗歌,     Programme如下:
Gitanjali (Song Offerings)
62   90   61   80   35   57

The  Gardener
Peace
Day After Day
Bird of the Wilderness
Do not go my Love
At the Well

On the day when death will knock at thy door,
what wilt thou offer to him?
Oh, I will set before my guest the full vessel of my life;
I will never let him go with empty hands.
All the sweet vintage of all my autumn days and summer nights,
all the earnings and gleanings of my busy life
will I place before him at the close of my days
when death will knock at my door.

Monster is monster, Ghost is ghost, Evil is evil..yak is quite a friendly spieces on earth.

Reach Before the Sun Shines

I’m not a monster lurking in the dark. But I really don’t like to run in the tropical sunshine. As long as possible, I always try to finish the race before the sun starts to shine.

The past race weekend was fully packed with a versatile agenda. And this is going to be a log book writing.
Keywords: Research, reading, music, friends, shopping, run, housework, movie. death, life.

Saturday morning, was in a research meeting delivering some crap presentation for the 3rd journal. After lunch I set out to esplanade library doing some reading and music. When dinner time, I met and dined with Samuel in Food Republic Suntec. To see him off for the musical trip to Europe, I treated a simple drink for us. Samuel passed me a DVD on Lurcerne Festival as gift. It’s a little bit unexpected that I sent two of my friends to Europe in one week, one for engineering conferenece one for music festival. Hope they both enjoy their trip to Europe. Guess sooner of later I would go for a longer trip in Europe one or two years later, one or two years staying there. Only a few cases may change my mind towards that..After dinner we went back to esplanade library, exchanged ideas on music and concerts with the help of the Wireless@sg network, I really appriecated it. After saying goodbye to Sameul, I resumed reading and music. The ice cream in the Singapore Art Cafe was not bad, and the only dessert not so expensive. An enjoyful time before the library close at 9pm. Haven’t done any shopping recently, I passed by marina square, found one long targeting shirt is under half discount, and later in HMV a reference 5CD set of Vivaldi 60% off. Hesitated and got them, guess I would starve for these…
Reaching home almost midnight, took a shower and prepared stuffs for the half marathon in the morning. When I finally had myself in bed, almost 1:30am. Oh, I haven’t moved to the Euro time zone yet. My alarm draged me off bed at 3:30am. Had a few slices of cake and a cup of coffee. I dressed up my running garment and took a taxi to pick up my friend Mr.Yeo, together to the starting point.

Back to esplanade again a few hours later, we found ourselves among the runners from all over the world. There was barely enough time for us to deposit our bags and return to the start. The 5:30 flag-off set us all on the race. I managed my pace according to my chronometer. After 5KM, I’ve overtaken those slow runners in front of me. At certain moment I was surprised to find my shadow’s the only one that run beside me. The fast runners were either far in front or trying to overtake me from behind. At 10KM point, saw some national runners on the returning direction. After the U-turn, I found myself a little slow if I want to break my personal record (PR). I tried to accelerate a bit but I dun dare to risk too much considering I’m still in lite injury with absence of training for almost half a year, and had just done only one 15+KM run recently. At the 15KM point, I feel refreshed again when realising it’s just another round of NTU to go. However, the acceleration didn’t last long before I reach 19KM point. The last two kilometers I released more power and sprinted for the last KM till the finishing line. 1h49mins, I reached before the sun starts to shine but failed to break my own PR. Taking the finisher’s medal, I wasn’t tired at all. This isn’t a good sign for performence, which means if I had managed my pace better I should cut another few minutes at least. But anyway I’m not a professional runner, I won’t break the world record even if I released all my power, not to say I’m still injured. I just enjoy the run for life. After a nice massage provided by sponsor, I went for some drink and back to collect my backpack. I met Yeo again. He finished with 2h25mins and joined me in the queue. Ironiclly, it took more than our race time for collecting our bags…. 11:00 am, after a quick swab and change, we finally rode on the bus back home.

Lunch and shower, I couldn’t wait to put myself horizontally again in my sweet home. A long nap, 2 to 6m and a simple dinner before I started to do some housework….8pm, I felt a bit tired and decided to start a classic movie for the evening. 00:30am recharge for the new week. The new week for journals is waiting for me.
——————————————————————————
When reaching lab monday morning, Mr. Yeo told me one army runner aged 25 died almost immediately after the run. This terriblely shocked me! Even though I already saw a few runners carried in stretchers yesterday. It was just too sad to hear a regular runner passed away so young. He must have pushed himself too much, when there is still a lot in life await for him. Let the peace and love be with Mr. Ho and his family. I’ll never let my mother know such news, but I do take care and responsibility of myself for those I love and love me, whom I’m to live for and care about.
